Government may revise the income slabs for affordable housing.

The Gujarat state government led by the BJP promised to construct 22 lakh houses in the cities and the urban areas and 28 lakh houses were proposed to be built in the rural areas. This was proclaimed by the party and the government. In reality they could only build less than 3.5 lakh houses. The state government has decided to revive the mission of affordable housing of the government which was formed last year in order to achieve the set target. This will help the government set new action plans which the state government has already prepared to chalk out. This will help the government to estimate the demand and the supply along with the need of the people too. For the target set by the government to build 22 lakh urban houses only a number less than two lakh was built in the last three years.

The secretary and the commissioner of the state housing opined that the demand supply estimates will be prepared in the new affordable housing action plan of the state of Gujrat. He also reiterated that the state government is trying to realign its affordable housing scheme with the “housing for all” scheme of the Prime Minister. The state would realign the state’s policy of Housing in 2014 to align it with the national policy. The government of India has fixed the income levels or the limit for availing such affordable housing which is Rs. 3 lakhs per annum. This limit may be revised by the government according to the ministry.  Accordingly the existing schemes of the government will be revised. More emphasis on the development will be laid on the economically weaker sections (EWS) and the Low Income Group (LIG) housing.

Increased attention will be laid on providing the affordable housing at cheaper rates and at a faster rate with the best of quality.   The BJP party had earlier promised in the year 2012 that colonies with good facilities and amenities with the houses built on 36 sq. m. each will be built for 36 lakh slum dwellers. The party also promised building 3.5 lakh houses for the lower middle class group of the urban areas under urban affordable housing scheme. It was also promised that 3.5 lakh, 2 BHK houses will be built for the middle class families too. In this endeavour government is attempting to link the concept of smart city with affordable housing. In all this the plans of the affordable housing earlier chalked out will be reframed and planned again.
